ACS

The Nationally Accredited Certification Scheme for Individual Gas Fitting Operatives, the replacement for ACOP, came into effect from 1 August 1998. From that date anyone considering undertaking work in gas where they do not have a valid certificate of competence (ACOP or ACS) will firstly have to prove competence by undertaking an appropriate ACS assessment. Until a competence certificate is obtained it is illegal for an operative to work in that category of work. The assessment process includes both practical and theory assessment under controlled conditions. There might also be verbal questions. The split as regards to time taken is dependent upon the particular assessment category undertaken. The theory papers take the form of multi. choice questions covering both open book (certain reference material will be available for your reference) and closed book (reference material may not be consulted). During the practical assessment, manufacturer's instructions and normative documents will be available for reference. On completion of the assessments your papers will be passed to the governing body that will verify the results and if satisfactory issue a Certificate. Each Certification lasts 5 years then you will need to be re-assessed. You should note that these are assessment tests only and require detailed knowledge of the categories in which an operative is being assessed. Prior preparation is recommended in most cases but not essential under the scheme. Assessments can be taken without preparation courses.
